Palermo Airport (IATA code PMO, ICAO code LICJ) is located at Punta Raisi, in the municipality of Cinisi, 35 km west of Palermo city centre. It serves all of western Sicily, including Trapani, Agrigento and the entire Sicilian Tyrrhenian coast.
The airport is managed by GES.A.P. S.p.A., Palermo's airport company. Opened in 1960 to replace the former Boccadifalco airport, it was dedicated in 1995 to the memory of judges Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino, victims of the mafia in 1992. The terminal was fully modernised in 2017.
In 2024, the airport welcomed 8.9 million passengers (+5.2% compared to 2023), an all-time record. It is the fifth-busiest Italian airport by traffic, behind Rome, Milan, Bergamo and Venice. PMO accounts for more than 95% of air traffic in western Sicily and nearly 50% of the island's total traffic.
The airport is an operating base for Ryanair (the dominant carrier with about 35% market share, flights to Milan, Rome, Bologna, Bergamo, Naples, Venice, Pisa, Turin, Trieste, Bari and many European destinations), ITA Airways (flights to Rome-Fiumicino and Milan-Linate) and easyJet. Palermo Airport shows marked seasonality but year-round activity: between June and September, traffic peaks with more than 250 flights per day in July and August. In low season (November-March), the number of flights decreases, but the main routes remain active, with connections to Rome, Milan, London, Paris, Madrid, Barcelona, Munich, Amsterdam and Brussels.
